Graduate Profile : Mick Hall

Mick Hall

Where are you currently working?  I am currently between seasons.  I just finished working for World Expeditions in the Northern Territory and will be starting with Tasmanian Expeditions again soon.

What do you love most about your job?  Helping to connect people to nature in a way they may not have been able to without a guided tour; the look of excitement on their face as they make these connections makes for an incredible experience.  Plus the wilderness makes a pretty cool office.

What program did you undertake at TasTAFE and when did you complete your training?  Certificate III & IV in Guiding, and Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation.  I completed my training in 2015.

What did you value about your training at TasTAFE?  Growing up in Tasmania, I was always passionate about the natural beauty we have here but I was blown away by the deeper understanding the course provided me through the knowledge taught to us on the flora, fauna and ecology of Tasmania.  Who would have known birds were so cool?

How has your training helped you with your Outdoor Recreation/Guiding career?  The course has enabled me to show people the smaller details that make up the bigger picture of an area, which is really important to provide a memorable trip for guests.

What is your most memorable moment you have experienced on a trip?  I once had the opportunity to take a group into a very sacred Aboriginal site, the experience was so overwhelming for one of the guests that they openly cried and thanked me for showing them the area.  It was pretty special to see someone make such an amazing connection to the land and its history!

If you could invite anyone on a trip, who would it be?  Brian Cox.  How cool would it be to have him tell you stories about the stars from high up in the Tassie mountains.

If you could give one piece of advice for someone contemplating a career in the outdoors, what would it be?  Do it because you are passionate about it and no other reason!
