Dave Gardner Student of the Year Award

Dave Gardner Award

Our team announced our Dave Gardner Student of the Year Award last night.  The award was created to recognise the achievements of the most outstanding Adventure Guiding student of the year.

The award has been named in memory of Dave Gardner, a teacher with the Tourism Department at Drysdale from 2000 to 2002. Whilst at Drysdale, Dave developed and coordinated the Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation, in response to a need to train adventure tour guides and outdoor instructors in Tasmania. Dave was a very experienced outdoor guide, leader and instructor with a particular passion for rock climbing and mountaineering, and had travelled the world following his passion.

Dave Gardner

He had a real commitment to sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with others so that they could enjoy the same opportunities.  Unfortunately Dave was tragically killed on New Year’s Eve 2003 in an avalanche on Mt Tasman in New Zealand. He was at the time working as a mountaineering guide and was in the act of guiding people to the top of New Zealand’s second highest peak on a six-day expedition when the avalanche struck. The naming of this Award is one way we can recognise the significant contribution Dave made to the Adventure Guiding course and the Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation in particular.

The winner of the 2015 Dave Gardner Student of the Year Award is SUE BEAUMONT.

Dave Gardner Award

Sue performed at a consistently high level in all subjects of the Adventure Tour Guiding program. She has demonstrated a high level of leadership and teamwork skills throughout the year, and has consistently shown a willingness to assist and support fellow students during their training. Through her exceptional attitude, people skills and commitment to hard work, Sue has demonstrated she has all the attributes of make an outstanding tour guide.

Immediately upon completion of her training, Sue secured employment as a bush walking and sea kayaking guide with three Tasmanian tourism businesses – The Maria Island Walk, Freycinet Experience Walk and is currently training with Roaring 40’s Kayaking.

Sue was presented with a voucher from our award sponsors Mountain Creek Outdoors to the value of $250.
